At today’s Caltrain board meeting, at modernization update presented by project lead Dave Couch, Caltrain disclosed new information about the technology compromises that could enable platform compatibility with High Speed Rail, and efforts to accelerate funding for compatibility and increased capacity.
Two options for customized cars are being considered – a two-door car that would serve platforms at two heights, and a “trap door” mechanism that would move to serve the two platform heights.   The two choices have different benefits and drawbacks. The “double door” approach would be mechanically simpler, but would allow fewer seats per train (see last paragraph for estimates). The “trap door” approach would not reduce passenger capacity, but would increase reliability risk by adding customized moving parts.  The double doors would enable Caltrain to serve current low platforms, and new higher platforms compatible with high speed trains.
To compensate for the reduction in train capacity, Caltrain and High Speed Rail are talking to MTC and the financial partners in the blended system, for a plan to accelerate a package of additional investments to increase capacity, including 8-car trains, platform updates to allow for 8-car trains and level boarding, and replacing the remaining 25% of diesel cars that were expected to keep traveling the corridor from San Francisco to San Jose, because of insufficient funding to fully electrify.  These improvements would add more than 33% additional capacity (more than the increase in going from 6-8 car trains), since fully electric service and level boarding would allow Caltrain to run a more optimized schedule that could carry more passengers.
The capacity lost to a double-door system would presumably be eventually regained, once Caltrain has updated all of its platforms to the new height. Â At that time, the extra door would be closed up and potentially seats could be added back.
A full evaluation of the benefits and tradeoffs for the board would logically consider the additional blended system capacity provided by Caltrain/HSR compatibility; the additional capital and operating costs and medium-term capacity impacts of compatibility; the dwell time and schedule implications of the nonstandard car design; and an overall schedule for a transition to level boarding and restoring the lost capacity.
The reason that Caltrain and High Speed Rail are considering compatible platforms is because compatibility will increase longterm capacity of the “blended system” with Caltrain and high speed rail at shared stations, especially the space-constrained Transbay terminal, which is expected to be the single most heavily used station on the Caltrain line. (Of course, passengers who use Transbay will also use other stations, so increased ridership at Transbay will mean increased overall ridership and fewer cars on the freeways).
Several public comments at the board meeting expressed concerns that Caltrain may be compromising its service for the benefit of High Speed Rail.  The board and stakeholders will need to consider the compromises, and also the amount of long-term increased capacity and operational improvements that would be gained with compatibility.
At the board meeting, Director Nolan asked for a board workshop to review the full consequences of these decisions that will shape the system for many decades, and GM Hartnett agreed. Â A board workshop would happen later this spring, to help the board make decisions for the RFP that is scheduled to be issued this summer.

Why not make all platforms high level?
Yes, that’s the point eventually. However, for logistical and financial reasons, it can’t be done overnight. More likely the transition to level boarding will happen over several years.
Just to be clear, extra doors don’t reduce capacity, they reduce seats. In fact, since people take up less space standing, there is actually more capacity. Many transit vehicles in SF and elsewhere are standing room only at peak hours towards the popular destinations.
Why would someone stand on Caltrain for one hour and 40 minutes + last mile connection at both ends when they can drive from door to door in 60 minutes? Might just as well drive to work just like Clem and everybody else.
Roland, if you’re spending 1 hour 40 mins, then you’re probably going from one end of the line to the other. In that case, you can hop on a baby bullet. Furthermore, since you likely board at one end, it’s perfectly reasonable to snag a seat in SF, since the train will be empty.
Also, if you’re traveling such a long distance, I don’t see how you can cover it in a car in only 60 mins. 280 isn’t what it used to be be. 101 is actually now faster between SF and Santa Clara.
I dearly hope that Caltrain & HSRA manage to settle on the lowest possible level boarding platform height to meet their respective needs in order to minimize the conversion cost/difficulty and obtrusiveness of Caltrain station platforms.
As others have noted, dual-height doors reduce seat numbers but do not overall capacity, and are probably the best choice for Caltrain. They could reclaim some of the lost seats by using fold-up seats in the areas in front of the doors. Passengers in those seats would probably need to stand up if a person in a wheelchair needed to board the train, but otherwise could sit for the entire journey. I think Roland is insinuating that dual doors would increase dwell times. I’m not at all convinced of that.

The last baby bullet to Tamien leaves at 6.33 PM (1 hour 8 minutes) followed by the “Express” at 6:56 PM (1 hour 25 minutes). There is noting else until the “local” at 8.40 PM (1 hour 40 minutes). 101 is pretty good after 8, so I am usually 1/2 way home by the time Caltrain leaves SF. The real kicker is that I save $2.50 ($15 for gas vs, $17.50 for Caltrain) and one hour each way door to door, I get a seat and I don’t have to pay for the passenger seat if I want to put my stuff on it 🙂

Your original comment was about standing for one hour. I don’t think the 6:56pm from SF leaves SF without an open seat and 8:40pm doesn’t either.
BTW. If you buy a monthly 4-zone pass, and use it daily, you pay only $10.55 each day or $5.38 each way which is about $10 savings over the $15 in gas…
You do have a legitimate complaint about spotty service to Tamien. It really wouldn’t be unreasonable to ask Caltrain to extend #190 to Tamien to fill in the 2 hour gap.
Dual door and trap door is unique requirement only for Caltrain and it will increase EMU cost and reduce reliability. Caltrain should convert to high platform at the same time of electrification.
Wooden Temporary platform can be built 1~2 days meaning one weekend shutdown. Conversion is not necessary at the same time in entire line. It can be phased, like SF-Milbrae, Milbrae-RWC, RWC-MTV, MTV-Tamien.

The point I was trying to make is that I and others should be able to get a seat as long as we don’t end up losing between 78 and 188 seats per train at which point we might just as well adjust our schedules and go back to driving because the 386, the 288, the 190 & the 192 are already packed when they leave SF (we need a new bullet to Tamien around 8.00 PM out of SF).
I asked TASI if there was any reason they terminated the 190 at Diridon and they did not know of any. The only reason I can think of is that SamTrans want to make sure I have to high-tail out of CAC meetings in San Carlos at 7.10 PM so that I can catch the 284 and transfer to the 288 in Redwood City because there is nothing else out of San Carlos to Tamien until 9.25 PM so I might just as well drive to San Carlos and be home by 8.30 instead of 11 PM if I want to attend the entire meeting.
Not counting the cost and hassle of parking in San Francisco. Agreed that it would be reasonable to add more service to Tamien.
The average Caltrain ride is 20-30 miles, which is a long time to stand. But some riders have shorter trips, and it would be better to have some space that is less uncomfortable for standing.
Caltrain shoud focus on more short distance traveller because of less impact on capacity and higher revenue per mile.
At this point, there is already significant volume of riders from Santa Clara county to Palo Alto which is shorter than avarage. Sooner or later NB AM express will be standing room only from San Jose Diridon but many of them still find seat after Palo Alto.
NB 319 leaves Tamien 3/4 full and half of the people who board in Diridon don’t get a seat. Sunnyvale passengers are unable to board the train until the conductor asks everyone to push their way to the end of the Gallery cars (both upstairs and downstairs). Any room left in bike cars ends up being used by standing passengers.
Nobody knows exactly how many passengers and bicycles there are on a train at any one point in time because the fine folks who run SamTrans would rather play with “algorithms” that they can “tune” on a regular basis than ask their VTA counterparts how to use passenger counters and wifi to transmit passenger and bike loads in real time.
Update: this is a done deal and the fine SamTrans folks who operate and plan Caltrain capacity will announce at the May Board meeting that Caltrain will have less seating capacity by 2020 than it has today. Is there any second hand electric locomotive available in US (or Europe)? If Caltrain can install electrification infrestructure within 1 or 2 year this option makes sense. (In China, it may takes less than 6 month to install)
Replace locomotive from diesel to electric still have advantages of faster accerelation and traveling time.
Dual door height EMU is too unique and costly. High speed rail is coming 14 years from now and we can find better solution than it now.
