San Jose Diridon Station will see nearly as many transfers between transit agencies in 2040 as there are transit trips today, according to a study being conducted to plan the future of the transit hub.   By 2040, the study projects that there will be over 16,000 transfers between agencies on a given day.  Today, the station sees just over 17,000 transit trips among all of the local and regional agencies.  According to the study, nearly 30% of future transit trips will include a transfer.

This means that San Jose would be a big beneficiary of regional fare streamlining, if the Bay Area can band together to implement a streamlined fare system along the lines of well-coordinated regions around the world.   Other regions that are currently streamlining their transit payment systems, including Sydney, Australia and Portland, Oregon are taking the opportunity to streamline fares, with a “pay-as-you-go” regional capped pass system.  Seattle, which received similar advice from their technology experts, is also currently investigating fare streamlining.

On Friday, April 14 at the MTC Operations Committee, and Monday, April 17 at the Clipper Executive Board meeting, these bodies will start to consider the feedback from technical experts and transit riders given by the April 3 deadline.
