NASA and the U.S. General Services Administration have recently posted bids to develop and manage “a minimum of 1,930 housing unitsâ€Â providing homes up to 4,900 people at Moffett Field.
A NASA/North Bayshore light rail connection is being investigated by VTA at the request of Google and NASA, which would facilitate commutes and other trips among homes, offices, and services in North Bayshore and the new Moffett neighborhood. The light rail project has been publicly mentioned at Mountain View Council discussions of North Bayshore, but there has been no further public disclosure we know of we’ve seen about the potential light rail link.
The 46-acre site North of 101 and West of Ellis is near the NASA/Bayshore light rail station on the path of a proposed connection to North Bayshore, and about 3 miles/15 minutes by light rail or bicycle from Mountain View
According to the Mercury News, up to 8,000 people who work or go to school at the NASA Ames Research Center site would have priority for the rental housing, of which 10% is proposed to rented to lower income residents at below market rate. To serve up to 4,900 residents, NASA is seeking development of 100,000 square feet of retail space.  Bids are due in writing by February 9, and NASA plans to make a decision by Spring, for construction over the next decade, according to the Daily Post.
The land is currently under the jurisdiction of the federal government, but City Manager Dan Rich was quoted in the Mercury saying that the city of Mountain View might consider annexation.

I don’t understand the reference to light rail. There already is a station there, so what exactly is being investigated? A spur? A shuttle? How many people will use it?
