Important new bill in congress supports federal transit service funding

An important bill just announced in Congress represents a huge step toward improving public transit in the Bay Area and around the country.

Federal funding has been essential in keeping public transit running through Covid and supporting service restoration. Thanks for your help in supporting that relief funding!

But did you know that in non-pandemic times, federal transit funding has all been about infrastructure – building new train lines and buying buses – without supporting service to run those buses and trains? Federal funding for service was slashed in the Reagan era.

Now, as Congress debates transportation and infrastructure, there is an important opportunity to bring back federal funding for service.

Congressman Hank Johnson (NJ)’s Stronger Communities through Better Transit Act (HR3744) will help us move toward this increased level of federal support by:

  • Providing $20 billion/year, exclusively for operations, over the next 4 years
  • Requiring funds make “substantial improvements to transit service” – that directly boosts frequency of buses, trains and increases routes and service areas
  • Prioritizing underserved communities and areas of persistent poverty
