This week, the Federal Transit Administration added a last-minute backup funding requirement for Caltrain electrification. The 4 core regional partners – VTA, San Mateo County Transportation Authority, San Francisco County Transportation Authority, and the Metropolitan Transportation Administration need to identify sources of funding for an additional 10% contingency, over and above the program’s existing contingency plans agains the risk of cost over-runs.
The contingency funding was added to the board meeting agendas of VTA, SMCTA, and SFCTA today, and the MTC in a special-purpose meeting added next week.
The SFCTA has passed the item this afternoon, and the SMCTA approval is expected to be uneventful.
We hear that there may be debate at the VTA, even though Santa Clara County has just raised $1 Billion out of its measure B funding for Caltrain capacity increases that build on basic electrification.
If you want to see electrification go forward and have a couple of minutes before the 4:30 board meeting, send a quick note to firstname.lastname@example.org.
If you can come to the meeting in person, it starts at 5:30. Â The location has been changed to VTA HQ, 3331 North First because of a power outage at the County HQ usual board location.
At the meeting will also be presented a first look at the VTA’s Next Network
