Encourage Air Quality Funds to help electrify Caltrain by 2020

Tomorrow, Thursday July 2 at 9:30pm, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) Mobile Source Committee will be considering allocating $20Million to help complete the first phase of Caltrain electrification.  The mostly-electric system scheduled to start operating in 2020 will reduce air pollution by nearly 90% compared to today’s diesel system, improving health along the corridor and especially in areas where trains park in San Francisco and San Jose.

To support this funding for Caltrain electrification to help reduce air pollution, send a note to the BAAQMD board and Mobile Source Committee, attention Committee Chair Scott Haggerty, Board Chair Carole Groom, and BAAQMD staff.  Send your emails to district1@acgov.org,cgroom@smcgov.org, jbroadbent@baaqmd.gov.  And copy us at friends@friendsofcaltrain.com

Caltrain needs to come up with an additional $450 million to complete electrification by 2020.  Fund sources including High Speed Rail, federal grant funding, loan funding, and the member agencies (San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara county).
