What should be covered in the Caltrain Electrification Environmental Study?

Caltrain will take written and in-person comments on the topics that should be covered in the Environmental Impact Report for Caltrain electrification until 5 pm on March 18, 2013.

Under the California Environmental Quality Act, projects need to study and disclose impacts on traffic, access, air quality, greenhouse gases, noise, trees, esthetics, and several other categories, and develop plans to reduce negative impacts where feasible.

Caltrain did an EIR for electrification earlier, but is redoing the study since the old work is out of date. Electrification is expected to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, to have both positive and negative impacts on traffic, and affect trees depending on the location.

At the start of the environmental study, the public gets to comment on what should be studied. Folk interested in Caltrain electrification should attend one of these meetings and comment.

If you have ideas or questions about what should be covered in the Caltrain electrification EIR, please comment – and be sure to give your comments to Caltrain in person or in writing.

Caltrain will hold four public scoping meetings in late February and Early March. Because of this schedule, Friends of Caltrain will not be hosting a forum on Feb 27 – everyone is encouraged to attend on of the scoping meetings instead.
